Myopia

Can eye fatigue lead to nearsightedness?
Myopia is characterized by clear vision up close but blurry vision at a distance, primarily caused by changes in the eye's axial length. Several factors contribute to the development of myopia: first, hereditary factors; second, inappropriate use of eyes, such as prolonged usage leading to eye fatigue, which can worsen the degree of myopia. Typically, the development of myopia occurs under the age of 20. After 20, there shouldn't be further development; if there is, it is referred to as pathological myopia. Therefore, it is important for patients with myopia or eye fatigue to use their eyes correctly, reduce close-up activities to avoid eye strain, and have regular check-ups to monitor their vision.

What should we do if a child has severe myopia of 800 degrees?
Myopia can be divided into pseudomyopia and true myopia, with true myopia further categorized into low, moderate, and high degrees. Clinically, myopia exceeding 600 degrees is usually referred to as high myopia. High myopia not only causes blurred vision in children but can also lead to various eye diseases, such as retinal detachment. Thus, it is very serious. Moreover, once children develop high myopia, their vision might continue to deteriorate even into adulthood. Therefore, parents must pay significant attention. During childhood, methods such as wearing glasses can be used to control the progression of myopia. If the child has reached adulthood and their eyesight has not continued to worsen over two years, considering treatment options like surgery might be possible, though currently, it is incurable.

Is a child's vision of 4.7 considered nearsighted?
Children's vision at 4.7 does require a comprehensive analysis to determine if they are nearsighted. Generally, a child with a vision of 4.7 is likely to be nearsighted, but this single parameter should not be used to diagnose myopia. It's necessary to differentiate whether the child has true myopia or false myopia. Additionally, the issue could be amblyopia, astigmatism, or farsightedness. Moreover, the child's age also plays a significant role in assessing vision. For instance, a vision of 4.7 might indicate nearsightedness in a child aged seven or eight, but for a child around three years old, a vision of 4.7 is considered normal. Parents are advised to take their child to the hospital for a dilated refraction test to ascertain the specific condition.

Why can't true myopia be reversed?
True myopia is mainly characterized by the elongation of the eyeball, and the current medical level cannot solve the problem of eyeball elongation. Therefore, its nature cannot be changed, which means it cannot be reversed. Present treatment methods can only alleviate the symptoms of blurred vision when viewing distant objects in myopic patients, but cannot resolve the fundamental nature of myopia. Current treatment options include prescription glasses, orthokeratology lenses, contact lenses, and surgical treatments. Surgical options include corneal laser surgery and ICL (implantable collamer lens) surgery. After the onset of myopia, it is important to rest and use the eyes correctly to prevent further progression of the condition.

Is 1000-degree acquired myopia hereditary?
High myopia of 1000 degrees can also be inherited. The inheritance of myopia is mainly significant in cases of high myopia. If both parents have high myopia, the heritability is almost above 90%. If one parent has high myopia, the heritability is 45%. If neither parent is myopic, the heritability is nearly 5%. Myopia is primarily formed due to improper use of eyes rather than hereditary factors, which are relatively rare and generally only account for about 10% of myopia cases. Therefore, correct use of eyes is very important.

Should the degree of myopia sunglasses be the same as the degree of myopia?
If you want to customize sunglasses or photochromic glasses with a prescription, the prescription should be exactly the same as that used for regular prescription glasses. The main purpose of these glasses is to protect the eyes from direct exposure to light, which can lead to excessive eye strain and cause symptoms like eye fatigue, pain, bulging, soreness, or the sensation of a foreign body in the eye. Typically, it is acceptable to use such glasses for prescriptions up to 500 degrees. However, it is generally not advisable for patients with high myopia, as these glasses do not provide clear vision.

Can massage cure myopia in children?
If a child develops myopia, it generally cannot be cured through massage. Depending on the specific case of myopia, if it is pseudo-myopia, it can be cured by massage. However, if it is confirmed as myopia after a dilated eye examination, massage cannot cure it. Once a child has myopia, the degree of myopia can increase by 50-100 degrees per year, so it is essential to control it promptly. After a series of examinations, if the child is suitable for orthokeratology lenses, these lenses should be used as they are the best method to control myopia.

Does nearsightedness surgery require an incision?
There are two types of myopia surgery. One is performed using lasers, and the other involves making a small incision on the edge of the cornea to implant an artificial lens into the eye. Corneal laser surgery uses a laser to create a concave mirror on the cornea to resolve the symptoms of blurry vision when looking at distant objects. The ICL surgery, which involves the implantation of an artificial lens, significantly improves the patient's vision after the procedure. Both types of myopia surgeries are currently quite advanced in terms of technology. Therefore, patients who wish to stop wearing glasses and have clear indications from pre-operative examinations can consider undergoing myopia surgery treatment.

Can people with high myopia and floaters undergo myopia surgery?
Patients with high myopia who experience floaters can also undergo myopia correction surgery to eliminate nearsightedness. However, symptoms of floaters will not improve after the surgery. The commonly used myopia correction surgeries include laser surgery and the implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens for aphakic eyes. Patients need to visit the ophthalmology department of a hospital for optometry, corneal topography, and A-scan ultrasound examinations. The type of surgery is then determined based on the condition of the eyes. Floaters are caused by the clouding of the vitreous body within the eye due to aging. They can be treated with oral medications to promote absorption. For example, currently, lecithin complex iodine tablets can be taken, but the absorption is slow, requiring patients to adhere to regular treatment. (Please follow the doctor's advice when taking medication.)

Children's myopia lacks which trace elements?
The relationship between myopia in children and the lack of trace elements is not significant. Myopia is generally caused by several reasons: The first is hereditary factors, where one or both parents may have myopia. The second reason is poor eye habits in children, such as sitting too close to the desk while doing homework, or excessive use of the eyes, like watching TV or spending a long time on mobile phones, which can easily lead to myopia in children. Once a child develops myopia, the degree could increase by 50-100 degrees each year. Thus, if this is the case, it is necessary to conduct a timely dilated optometry for the child to confirm whether they can wear orthokeratology lenses. If the child is over eight years old and all conditions are suitable, orthokeratology lenses can be prescribed to control the progression of myopia.
