Is the surgery to remove nasal polyps painful?
The surgery to remove nasal polyps does involve some pain, but there is no pain during the surgery itself, because it is performed under general anesthesia using an endoscope. This type of anesthesia puts the patient entirely to sleep, in a state similar to sleeping, so there's essentially no pain felt during the process. The removal of nasal polyps via endoscopy is a minimally invasive technique; there's no external incision as the polyps are thoroughly excised from within the nasal cavity using the endoscope. Although the surgery doesn't appear to cause significant external damage, postoperative nasal packing is required. If the packing material used is absorbable or dissolvable, like Nasopore cotton, the discomfort is relatively minor. However, if non-absorbable materials like sponges or other types of gauzes are used, which need to be pulled out later, the procedure can cause more pain. The main discomforts include headaches, nasal congestion, dry throat, and in some cases, ear stuffiness. These symptoms usually diminish as the nasal packing is removed over time.
