Will babies with atrial septal defects develop slowly?
Babies with atrial septal defects do not necessarily develop more slowly. An atrial septal defect is one of the congenital heart diseases. If the diameter of the defect is relatively small, it will not affect the normal blood flow of the heart, the oxygen supply to the body, or significantly impact daily activities like sleeping or exercising for the baby. The growth and development of the baby would be normal, with no abnormalities compared to their peers. However, if the diameter of the atrial septal defect is relatively large, typically exceeding 6-8 millimeters, it can cause the baby to experience a lack of oxygen during physical activities, leading to a compromised quality of life and potentially causing delayed development.

Can breastfeeding cause lactose intolerance?
Breast milk can also cause lactose intolerance, primarily because it also contains lactose, which plays an important role in the nutrition of infants, promoting the development of the brain's nervous system and providing energy for the growth and development of the baby. However, conditions such as rotavirus gastroenteritis or chronic diarrhea can trigger a dysbiosis of the gut flora, leading to insufficient secretion of lactase in babies. Once lactose intolerance occurs and is not alleviated in time, it can prolong the course of the baby's diarrhea, cause digestive and nutritional absorption disorders, often resulting in watery stools increasing in frequency, and the baby may also experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Therefore, in such cases, it is necessary to temporarily stop breastfeeding, administer lactase or switch to lactose-free formula milk for management, and resume normal diet once the symptoms are relieved.

Should I take vitamin D or D3 for rickets?
Rickets should be treated with D3, but strictly speaking, what we commonly refer to as vitamin D is D3, just phrased differently. Vitamin D3 helps promote the absorption of calcium by bones, preventing the occurrence of rickets symptoms. The main clinical manifestations of rickets appear in the deformation of bones, such as square skull, pigeon chest, flaring ribs, X-shaped legs, O-shaped legs, and other changes in bone status. The nervous system can show symptoms such as night sweats, nervous excitability, balding at the back of the head, poor sleep quality, and easiness to cry. For rickets, it is necessary to diagnose early, timely supplement with vitamin D to prevent symptoms from worsening, and also to get more sunlight and engage in outdoor activities, which helps the body synthesize vitamin D and absorb calcium.

Can rickets with rib eversion in babies be cured?
Babies with rib flaring can be treated, but it requires assessment based on relevant clinical symptoms and laboratory tests. First, it is necessary to understand that rickets is a metabolic bone disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin D, which often results not only in rib flaring but also in square skull, pigeon chest, and either bowlegs or knock-knees. Neurologically, symptoms may include night sweats, easy startling during sleep, and poor sleep quality. When these conditions occur, a physical examination by a specialist is essential, along with comprehensive tests, including measuring the specific levels of vitamin D, and selecting appropriate vitamin D supplements. If the symptoms of rib flaring are severe and accompanied by a noticeable pigeon chest, orthotic supports may also be necessary for correction. If rib flaring affects normal breathing, severe cases may require surgical treatment. Therefore, the extent of severity based on clinical symptoms will dictate the treatment approach—whether it is oral medication, orthotic correction, or surgery.

How many days does infant thrush heal on its own?
Thrush in infants generally relieves within a week, but the full recovery period depends on the baby’s own immune system and the medication used. Since thrush is a fungal infection, predominantly caused by the Candida species, which is a conditional pathogen. If a baby has low immunity and a disrupted intestinal flora balance, it can lead to recurrent episodes of thrush, facilitating the growth and infection of fungi. Treatment can be administered using sodium bicarbonate solution for cleaning, along with antifungal agents and oral probiotics, which often alleviate symptoms within a week. However, if the baby's immunity is not effectively improved later, and the imbalance of the body's flora is not effectively controlled, recurrence is likely. Therefore, the treatment of thrush is comprehensive and not solely reliant on medication. (Medication should be used under the guidance of a physician.)

What should I do if a baby gets prickly heat?
If babies develop prickly heat, it should be considered that their sweat glands are underdeveloped, making them susceptible to changes in temperature which can lead to increased sweating. Their sweat can block the sweat glands and increase the occurrence of prickly heat. In terms of treatment, first of all, it's important to pay attention to the temperature of the baby's living environment, ensuring a certain level of humidity and temperature to reduce the stimulus of sweating. Additionally, care should be taken that the clothing is not too tightly wrapped; preferably choose cotton and loose clothing to keep the skin breathable. Furthermore, if prickly heat occurs, you can apply baby-specific prickly heat powder for topical application. Also, pay attention to any symptoms of skin infection, and if present, timely medication should be administered to avoid exacerbation of symptoms leading to infection.

Does Tetralogy of Fallot easily lead to heart failure?
Tetralogy of Fallot often leads to symptoms of heart failure because it is a severe congenital disease. Affected children tend to present with cyanosis of the lips, impaired growth and development, and a simple echocardiography can reveal specific indicators such as aorta overriding, pulmonary stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, and ventricular septal defect. These children have limited lung and heart function, making them prone to increased cardiac load and symptoms of heart failure following infections or physical activity. Therefore, early surgical treatment is necessary for these children to prevent recurrent infectious diseases and heart failure, which can affect their normal growth and development. Additionally, it is crucial to enhance nutrition and exercise in their daily lives to boost their immune system. For Tetralogy of Fallot, early detection and treatment are essential.

How to treat eczema with broken skin in children?
In cases of eczema in children, if there is broken skin, it is necessary to enhance skin care to prevent infection. Disinfectant solutions can be used to clean the skin, followed by the application of anti-inflammatory ointments to prevent infection of the wound. Additionally, attention should be paid to the fact that the skin in areas affected by eczema is sensitive and has lower self-immune capabilities, which can lead to worsening of the condition after infection, causing symptoms such as fever and sepsis. Therefore, once there is broken skin in the area affected by eczema, it is important to clean the wound promptly. If there are signs of pus formation, a specialist should examine and clean the wound, and oral anti-inflammatory medications may be necessary to prevent worsening of the infection. Also, dietary considerations should include avoiding spicy foods and those likely to cause allergies.

Can children take a bath when they have a cold?
Children with colds can take baths, but care should be strengthened during the bath to avoid catching cold, thus preventing the symptoms of the cold from worsening. Since a cold in children is an infectious disease, bathing can keep the child's skin clean and make the child feel comfortable. Appropriate water temperature is beneficial for promoting blood circulation in babies and speeding up metabolism, which is conducive to the recovery of the baby's condition. However, if warming is not promptly ensured during the bath, or if the water temperature is too low or too high, it can cause repeated or even worsened symptoms of the cold in babies. Therefore, parents must pay attention to some nursing details during the bath.

Can infantile colic cause constipation?
Infantile colic can cause constipation. It is first important to understand that colic is caused by abnormal intestinal movements and stimulation of the intestinal mucosa, leading to pain symptoms. This is often due to increased intestinal gas or constipation, which disrupt normal intestinal movements and thus also cause symptoms of constipation. In such cases, one can first try abdominal massage to promote intestinal movements and help the expulsion of gas and stool, thereby alleviating symptoms. Additionally, taking probiotics orally can regulate gastrointestinal function and aid in digestion and absorption. Attention should also be paid to dietary adjustments, preferably eating light and easily digestible food to reduce the production of intestinal gas and alleviate its symptoms. If symptoms persist for a long time without significant relief, it is still necessary to have a specialist doctor examine and prescribe medication accordingly.
